The American Heritage Dictionary defines it as an event that accomplishes its intended purpose. In other words, we are successful when we set out to do something, anything and we get it done – regardless of the size or intensity of the task. What a simple concept. Yet somehow, when applied to our health, we build the meaning of success into something extraordinary and unattainable. We discount our progress because we: haven’t yet reached the end result, set unrealistic goals, and become overly discouraged when we make mistakes.
It’s time to change all of that erroneous thinking. And by accurately defining what success is, we’ve taken a leap in our journey toward healthy living. My mentor, Roy H. Williams, inspired me with the following; it’s a simple formula for success and I want you to have it.
1) Visualize a specific goal and heed the knowledge of White Rabbit who once said, “When you don’t know where you’re going, any road will get you there.”
2) Take the first step – don’t sit around waiting to accomplish it all at once. “The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.” -Lao Tzu
3) Never stop, keep on going one small step at a time. American Author, Daniel Quinn said, “Don’t wait. Where do you expect to get by waiting? Doing is what teaches you, generates ideas, and leads to inspiration. Nothing else and nothing less.”
4) Appreciate your progress each and every day. Give yourself credit for what you’ve done. “God saw all that He had made, and it was very good. And there was evening, and there was morning-the sixth day.” -Genesis 1:31
5) Move. If evening finds you at the same place you were this morning, take just one step before you lay down. In the words of Henry Van Dyke, “The magic isn’t in the size of your actions, but in the relentlessness of them.”
Just like beauty, success is in the eyes of the beholder. As you work toward your personal endeavor of healthy living, don’t lose track of what true success is (even small achievements deserve celebration). At Women’s Health Advantage we’ll help you to keep moving forward no matter what. Together we’ll achieve your goals. Give us a call today!

Lunch: Smoked turkey, avocado, and tomatoes in pita bread.
Dinner: Baked salmon, spinach salad with raspberry vinaigrette, and a whole bag of Doritos.
Dessert: A huge ice cream sundae topped with extra caramel, chocolate, and whipped cream (before bed you sneak into the kitchen and eat one more)!
Can you relate to this kind of eating?
Do you try and eat healthy sometimes but other times you binge on unhealthy foods? Whether you sometimes binge on unhealthy foods, constantly eat the wrong foods, or just don’t get enough of the foods your body needs, eating badly is a hard habit to kick. But with the right motivation, encouragement, and direction you can do it.
Motivation is the first step to changing your eating habits.
That’s because motivation to do anything comes from having a strong why statement. What motivates you to do anything in life? A good enough reason, right? You work to earn money. You eat to satisfy your hunger and treat your taste buds, etc.
My why statement pertaining to health is:
“I want to grow old gracefully. As I age, I want to be flexible and enjoy physical activity without pain. I want my mind to be sharp for as long as possible. And I want to look fabulous! Since I place exceptional value on these things, my motivation for attaining them is very high. Therefore, I’m avid about eating healthy, exercising, and getting the rest my body requires.”
If you’re having a hard time with healthy eating, chances are you need a stronger why.
Once your why is established, don’t stop there. To be successful, you’ll also need encouragement and direction along the way. That’s where I come in. Using my expertise and your willingness, we can identify problem areas concerning nutrition, and put together the best plan for turning things around. I promise to help, encourage, and keep you accountable so that you can achieve your goals.
Here’s how you start:
Take a self-inventory and find your why; post it on your fridge or bathroom mirror and read it daily; then contact me to take the next step. Caution… no sneaking into that freezer!
It seems I’m always working on my clients in regards to Motivation. What motivates people? The way I see it, the physical process of becoming motivated actually happens in the brain as we imagine, or remember, doing what it is we want to do. If we’ve never done it, we imagine what it will feel like. If we’ve done it before, we remember what it was like, and if it was pleasurable or worthwhile, we’ll be motivated to do it again.
The bottom line on motivation is that the thing we are thinking of doing has to have value to us – when it has value we are more inclined to want to do it. As my coach always says – the higher the value, the higher the motivation.
When I can imagine all the positive benefits of working out, walking and eating my fruits and vegetables, it’s easier for me to do those things. When I lose sight of the why of doing them, I am less motivated to go out of my way for them and more inclined to do what ever feels good in the moment.
People ask me all the time what motivates me to take good care of myself, drink funny tasting “green drinks,” turn down the cookies for a piece of fruit, the latte for the green tea or get a little extra sleep at the expense of keeping up with the latest TV drama – and I must admit, it’s because I have a strong why. I want to grow old gracefully and be really, really healthy. I want to be flexible and smart and able to enjoy physical activity without pain. I know that that kind of robust good health won’t happen tomorrow unless I do something about it today! The higher the value, the higher the motivation. I put a high value on staying able to do what I want to do, with ease.
So when you are feeling a little down or discouraged, and you don’t really want to go out of your way, when you’d rather sleep than get up and exercise, and when you’d rather have that pint of Ben and Jerry’s than something healthy, I want you to stop – just for a moment and think:
- Will your behavior today give you the result you want tomorrow?
- Are your actions today in alignment with what you really want for the future?
- Are you on track with what is in the highest good for YOU?
- Check in with yourself and remember the why of vibrant health.

The benefits of serving homemade broth during times of illness are much more than an old wives tale. Studies indicate that concentrated broth, made from the bones of animals, is both a valuable food and a medicine.
Historically broth has served as a cross-cultural remedy for the sick and weak. In addition, it is also recognized as a classic folk treatment for colds and flu, and has been used for ailments that affect a variety of connective tissues including: the GI tract, joints, skin, lungs, muscles and blood.
Broth also continues to be a staple for professional and gourmet cuisine due to its incredible taste and body. The processed versions of broth found in the grocery store are, unfortunately, dilute and void of nutritional value.
Utilizing the standard of herbal formulation, homemade broth actually qualifies as a medicine. The process by which broth is prepared allows nutrients to be immediately available for the body to absorb. These nutrients are as varied as the tissues that broth is made from. Bone, marrow, cartilage, and collagen enrich the broth with nutrients such as: chondroitin sulfate, protein, calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, sodium, and potassium to name a few.
Many of these may sound like familiar supplements that you find on the shelves of your local drug store. However, those bottles contain synthetic products that aren’t easily absorbed by the body, if absorbed at all. In comparison, broth is easily digested and the nutrients well utilized.
The elements found in finished broth are well known nutrients that are used to support bone health and healthy aging. They are also beneficial in the management of a variety of other conditions: arthritis, inflammatory bowel disease, food allergies, digestion problems, colic, leaky gut, malnutrition, muscle wasting, cancer, calcium deficiency, anemia, poor wound healing, injuries to soft tissues-cartilage-bone, memory loss, depression, joint lubrication, atherosclerosis, cholesterol, asthma, liver support, and the list goes on.
Take some time this week to enjoy another of nature’s most perfect foods! If you’d like a recipe for homemade broth preparation, check out my recipe section. You are also welcome to stop by the office or email me. I always recommend organic free-range chicken and organic grass-fed beef for maximum benefits. These can be found via organic farmers, online at US Wellness Meats or at Whole Foods stores.

“Chia” is the Mayan word for strength. The chia plant is a member of the sage family. There is no commercial growing of chia in the U.S. Chia is imported from Mexico and Central and South America-Ecuador, Argentina, and Bolivia.
Individuals who try chia claim that they can literally feel the energy of the seeds; a strengthening and sustained surge unlike anything resulting from any other food.
What makes them work? Synergy between all their outstanding features is at least part of the answer. Chia seeds are high in:
- easily digestible protein
- essential fatty acids, particularly omega-3
- vitamins
- soluble fiber
- antioxidants
- minerals
- Chia seeds have much in common with flax seeds, which have a deserved reputation as a superfood. If you run down a comparative chart, you see a back and forth, with chia higher in some nutrients, flax higher in others. The clear advantage for chia seeds is that their natural antioxidants make them stable, whereas flax quickly becomes rancid.
Like flax, chia seeds have the ability to hold about twelve times as much water as their own weight. Thus, one of the best uses of chia seeds is to convert them into chia gel. To do this you add 1/3 cups of seeds to 2 cups of water, stir well to break up any clumps, and let sit in your refrigerator for about twelve hours (It will gel in less than an hour, but the additional soaking increases the nutritional impact of the gel.).
Good candidates for chia gel are salad dressings, dips, and spreads. Chia gel can also be used as a fat replacer in many baking recipes.
In any recipe that calls for flax seeds, consider substituting chia seeds. The chia flavor is bland, so they work great in smoothies and can be sprinkled on just about anything. Two to four tablespoons a day will improve your nutrition and encourage intestinal regularity (And, yes, the “hair” on Chia Pets is from chia seeds!).
Nutrition researchers looking at chia have called it an “almost perfect food”. Its many benefits include:
- Providing energy
- Boosting strength
- Bolstering endurance
- Leveling blood sugar
- Inducing weight loss
- Aiding intestinal regularity

With Thanksgiving approaching we can almost taste the flavorful turkey, green beans and sweet pumpkin pie. While enjoying the holiday season, the company of family and friends, and a delicious feast, save some room for something a little different this year. I’m not referring to dessert, but to knowledge. Surely you’ll have room for that!
If you’ve read my article on cholesterol, you’ll recall that cholesterol contributes to our body’s functioning and that hypercholesterolemia (high cholesterol) is a contrived disease of the 21st century. People with supposed high cholesterol are put on statin drugs. Common brand names are Lipitor, Mevacor and Zocor. They’re used to lower cholesterol and they do this very well. Except they rob the body of essential nutrients resulting in internal body changes that can have dangerous, far reaching effects.
Lowering total cholesterol, in most cases, isn’t justified. Since cholesterol is part of every cell membrane, depletion causes our cells to leak. This is an emergency as far as our bodies are concerned and they go into repair mode sending cholesterol to patch up the leakage. Since statin drugs lower cholesterol our bodies are left without the necessary tools to properly repair themselves.
Coenzyme-Q10 is an essential nutrient that supports muscle function, protects from heart disease, cancer, heart attacks and heart failure. It’s frightening to know statin drugs deplete this nutrient. Side effects as a result of this depletion include: muscle pain or weakness, pain and tingling in the hands, difficulty walking, loss of feeling in the lower extremities, liver failure, cognitive decline and heart failure. Many people never fully recover from these side effects. The damage has already been done.
Awareness about statin drugs and their side effects makes it apparent this treatment is not ideal. I’m not advocating that you dismiss what your doctor may tell you. I’m advocating awareness about these harmful drugs and their alternatives. With the abundance of information available there’s no reason to be uninformed. There are numerous websites and chat rooms with information and first hand accounts from people who have experienced these effects. As you enjoy your Thanksgiving feast, remember to leave room for knowledge about cholesterol and statin drugs. It may save your health.
Let Women’s Health Advantage help you become informed and find the path to true vibrant health.

Vacation time is here … road trips, long flights, and rising gas prices await us. While packing suitcases, booking rooms, and planning itineraries, set aside time to think about what you’ll eat while on the road (or in the air).
Maintaining healthy eating habits while on vacation can be a challenge; so, do your homework, put in some time and effort, and you’ll find it is possible to vacation and eat healthy at the same time.
Here are some quick tips to get you started:
- Research: Check online for restaurants in the area before you leave home. You may be surprised, as I have been, at what you’ll find.
- Sugar Overload: Breakfast is your most important meal so avoid highly refined carbohydrates like pancakes, bagels, etc. Stay away from juices and canned fruit as well since they are full of sugar. The last thing you need is a spike in your blood sugar with a subsequent crash leading to fatigue, brain fog, and irritability. You want a happy and memorable vacation, remember?
- Brain Food: Eat protein and good fats instead; they’ll keep you alert and satisfied. Eggs, steak, even bacon or sausage are better choices. Eggs should be over-easy, or poached in order to avoid packaged egg mixes. Always ask if real butter, fresh fruit and veggies are available.
- Lunch: Start with a large salad topped with grilled meat or fish; use olive oil, vinegar, or coconut oil as your dressing. Sandwiches are good, just avoid white bread and processed meats. Instead, opt for a wrap with Romaine lettuce.
- Dinner: Choose meat or fish for your protein (Black Angus beef or un-farmed fish are ideal). Steamed veggies, a large salad, or a baked potato are great too – don’t forget the real butter! If you’re feeling adventurous, try something tasty like lamb, buffalo (my favorite), or venison. Ethnic restaurants can entice the taste buds and many still use traditional foods and cooking methods.
You’ll want to bring your own coconut oil and sea salt as these can be hard to find. If possible, pack a small cooler of your favorite healthy snacks like fresh fruit, raw cheese, nuts etc. Should you come across a roadside stand or farmer’s market, take a look. You may find some healthy tasty treats. Enjoy your vacation!

Have you ever encountered one of those days when your alarm clock has the audacity not to ring? I know I have, and it went something like this…
Okay, it’s possible this was the fifth time I hit the snooze button (too many hot flashes and not enough sleep!). There is not one thing in the fridge to eat except double AA batteries, and there’s a very strange woman inhabiting my bathroom. Oops! That was me!! I’ve got to do something about that face!
Sound familiar? Then you already know what happens next.
You hit the highway going Mach II with your hair on fire when you realize your gas gauge is now past the empty mark. You give the gauge a hard smack as you glide into the curb. And guess what… you’re only an hour into the day!!
Having had my share of these “days from hell,” I know just how easy it is to let circumstances and people readjust my attitude thermostat.
So, what typically happens after such a glorious beginning? Well, I don’t know about you, but I will probably stuff all the carbs I can down my throat – all the while blaming my “bad day.” My blood sugar will rise, then plummet to new lows, I will growl and hiss at co-workers and friends and there will be no taming this shrew! Please, somebody get her some estrogen and a piece of chocolate!
As the kids say, I am carrying around some really bad “tudes.”
Now, let’s stop the projector, change the reel, sit back in our seats and take a hard look at these reactions and attitudes.
1. Taking it from the top, let’s begin with a question for you: Do you have a personal philosophy? No, not that class you took in school – your philosophy, the way you view life. Stay with me here…
To quote the great Jim Rohn, “Philosophy drives attitude. Attitude drives actions. Actions drive results. Results drive lifestyles.” So, if the results you’ve obtained so far with your health, relationships, career, or finances are less than stellar, maybe a philosophy checkup is in order.
Now most of us, me included, will likely make the big mistake of starting our overhaul with “action.” But, thinking this through, when you put together a lousy attitude and no personal philosophy, how meaningful can any action possibly be?
So, I’ll ask you again: What is your philosophy, or do you even have one? If not, give it some serious thought and write your thoughts down. This will be the driving force that will guide your attitudes and ultimately your life.
2. Now that you’ve established your personal philosophy, time to develop a “YES” attitude. I can hear you asking… “Why can’t I just have a ‘positive’ attitude? And besides, what’s the difference?”
Good question! I admit, they both sound good and you would be right, except… “Yes” is so much more powerful because it assumes that everything will start with “yes” even when it’s “no.”
A “YES” attitude helps you formulate your responses in a more positive form and is more declarative. If you think of yourself as a “YES” person, not only will you be in a more positive frame of mind, but you will assist your mind in bringing about the positive outcome you’re looking for.
Now let’s take that attitude one step further…
3. Have an attitude of celebration! No, this isn’t a call to become a “party animal,” but give yourself the credit you deserve. Rethink the fact that, so often, we only rejoice our major victories rather than the many successful steps we’ve taken to ultimately reach our goal.
How many times have we postponed acknowledging our small accomplishments until we “lose all the weight” or “complete writing the entire novel” we started?
It’s equally important to celebrate the steps that went into making these achievements happen. So, get out there and kick up your heels about losing those first 5 pounds, or completing that first chapter of your novel. After all, you deserve it! And that brings us to the next step…
4. How does your time management attitude stack up? Or, to say it another way, do you know what is really important in your life right now?
I’m sure you know what you should do, whether it’s lose that 20 lbs., exercise more or eat a healthier diet. So, it’s not a lesson in time management that I think is needed as much as a lesson in how you’re spending your time.
Is valuable time being lost to procrastination, poor self-image, fear of rejection or possibly preparation? It is the power of these lessons that allows us to execute the things that in our minds we believe we “don’t have time for” but in reality we are just avoiding. Here’s a change in attitude that brings enormous benefits…
5. Have an attitude of selfishness. Yes, you heard me right, but this does not mean license to whine or manipulate, far from it. It is just a reminder that in order for you to be the BEST you can be for others, you must first be the BEST for yourself.
Maybe you’ve noticed that your husband, children, career or other responsibilities have worked their way into those front positions of your life… leaving you standing at the end of the line, patiently waiting your turn.
Remember, it’s okay to set limits and say “No” to others, you need to indulge yourself on occasion as well as pursue your own goals and dreams. The more that you take care of your own needs, the healthier and stronger you’ll be and the more you’ll be able to achieve as a result.
Remember, you really are #1. Take care of yourself first and everything else will fall into place.

Despite the recent boom in popularity of coffee merchants and drive-thru java stations, coffee drinking may be having a negative impact on your health, especially for mature women. Women are faced with new health challenges as they age.
Here are the top seven reasons for limiting coffee and caffeine to improve health and ease aging symptoms.
- Coffee drinking is associated with increased risk of heart attack - Heart disease is the number one cause of death for women in the U.S. and studies show that coffee consumption may be linked to an increase in blood pressure, cholesterol, and inflammation, all risk factors for heart disease.
- Coffee interferes with mineral absorption - Studies show that caffeine, along with other ingredients found in coffee and decaf coffee can reduce iron availability up to 50%. Caffeine also interferes with your body’s ability to absorb calcium, magnesium and potassium. This may affect energy and strength.
- Coffee consumption may lead to osteoporosis - Low bone density increases a woman’s chance for developing osteoporosis. Studies suggest that women with high caffeine intake experience higher rates of bone loss. The high acidity of both regular and decaf coffee decreases the body’s ability to absorb calcium, potassium, magnesium and iron essential for strong bones.
- Coffee drinking is associated with increased incidence of hot flashes - Women who drink less coffee report lower rates of hot flashes during menopause. Coffee drinking can increase the intensity of hot flashes during the night.
- Caffeine negatively interacts with hormone replacement - Research suggests that postmenopausal women who take hormones and also drink coffee have an increased risk of developing Parkinson’s disease.
- Caffeine increases breast pain and fibrocystic breasts in susceptible women - Studies show a link between caffeine consumption and fibrocystic breasts (non-cancerous lumps in the breast tissue). Women who experience regular breast pain decreased their pain by omitting caffeine from their diet.
- Caffeine may affect sleep - Mature bodies metabolize caffeine more slowly. Caffeine can still be in your blood stream up to 18 hours after consumption. One cup of coffee in the early morning may still be interfering with your sleep cycle.
Try TeeccinoTM and Dandy BlendTM as excellent coffee substitutes. Teeccino is brewed like coffee and available at Whole Foods. Dandy Blend comes in an instant form and makes a delightfully healthy frappuccino! It is available in my office.

Ever heard of coconut water? If not, it’s about time you did. Known for the multitude of health benefits it provides – there’s nothing on the market quite like it. For years coconut water has been used to successfully combat dehydrating illnesses such as dysentery, influenza, salmonella, and E. coli. Coconut water provides essential fluids and nutrients to properly rehydrate the body and provides the tools it needs to heal successfully.
One of the most remarkable characteristics of coconut water is its chemical profile and mineral content. The primary minerals or electrolytes are essentially the same as those found in human blood. Studies have shown how coconut water can improve blood circulation, lower blood pressure and reduce the risk of heart attack and stroke; impressively, coconut water has FDA approval to carry the specific claim that it may reduce the risk of high blood pressure and stroke. But the benefits don’t stop here.
In addition, coconut water is known to be beneficial in many other areas of health. Specifically, it relieves fatigue, constipation and other digestive disturbances, kidney and bladder disorders, glaucoma, and cataracts. It’s also been shown to reverse or slow down the aging process – I’ll toast to that!
Because it’s an ideal drink after rigorous activity, professional and amateur athletes are turning to coconut water to quench their body’s deepest thirst. Many of the sports drinks on the market claim to rehydrate your body when in actuality they’re doing just the opposite. Loaded with high fructose corn syrup, caffeine, artificial colors and flavors, these drinks are actually toxic cocktails. There’s no nutritional value and they can initiate the storage of fat (none for me, thank you). Coconut water, on the other hand, is rich with minerals, vitamins, amino acids, enzymes, and provides a natural boost of energy. It enhances and maintains health and is more effective than commercial sports drinks in rehydrating the body.
You’ll find coconut water in health food stores in bottles, cans, or tetra paks. You can also drink it fresh from the coconut; just make sure to purchase young green coconuts, not the brown hairy ones normally seen in stores. Stock up today and let the healing begin!

“Everything You Ever Wanted To Know About The Common Cold
Plus A Few Things You Didn’t!”
Have you ever had an experience that goes something like this?
You have just awakened to a great new day. But before you can even muster the fortitude to crawl out of your cave of blankets, a relay of sneezes somehow escapes from your mouth with the force of a Florida hurricane. Ah… ah… ah… choooooooo!
You notice a slight shiver go through your body. Then, when you attempt that first big breath you are suddenly incapable. Why? Because your sinuses are packed tighter than cotton in a pill jar!!
Dragging your body to the bathroom, you take a quick glance in the mirror and notice the pair of eyes staring back. They give you the appearance of someone who has stayed up too late drinking rubbing alcohol and watching Ronco infomercials.
Oh, and could that really be your head on those shoulders, and when did it start feeling like the Goodyear blimp?
My dear, it’s time for Cold Care 101!!
Did you know that the cold and its ‘cousin’ flu are the most common infectious diseases in the entire world? It is also the leading cause of absence from both work and school, and the #1 reason for doctor visits.
If you were to ask what causes a cold, most people would probably guess (incorrectly) that colds and flu are caused by bacteria, cold weather, being improperly dressed or walking around with wet hair or clothing.
The real story is that colds and flu are caused by viruses (microscopic clusters of genetic material surrounded by a protein covering). There are four recognized distinct categories of cold viruses: rhinovirus, which is the most common, adenovirus, parainfluenza virus and coronavirus (and, no that does not come from beer!).
