As we move head long into the fall/winter season you may be considering if you, your children, or possibly a loved one should have an annual flu shot. After all, the signs and recommendations are relentless. News broadcasts admonish us and signs in every pharmacy shout out the reminder “Flu shots given here.”

But before you rush out and expose yourself to these vaccines please consider the following: In children aged 6 – 24 months who were vaccinated with a flu shot, it was found to be no more effective than giving normal saline (a placebo). In children over two years it was effective only 33% of the time. Meaning that two-thirds of the time these children remained at risk even after the vaccine was given. This included 51 studies involving 290,000 children.

Studies show results even less effective in regards to adults/elderly. Flu vaccines were found to actually be ineffective in both preventing the flu or the possible complications that could result from the flu. In fact, in a review of 75 studies by researchers they found that the evidence to support the use of flu vaccines in adults/elderly was so poor that it “provided no guidance on the safety of the flu vaccine.”

Next, let’s take a look at exactly what the flu vaccine is made up of. You may be shocked:

1.) A mixture of egg proteins including bird contaminant viruses

2.) Polysorbate 80 – associated with infertility in animals

3.) Formaldhyde – a known carcinogen

4.) Triton X100 – a detergent

5.) Sucrose – sugar

6.) Thimerisol – typically seen in multi-dose flu vaccine bottles and is 50% mercury by weight, a known neurotoxin and the third most toxic item known to mankind. You should never ingest or inject any type of products containing mercury.

The commonly prescribed flu vaccine Flulaval contains 25 ug of mercury, in the form of thimerisol, as well as formaldehyde, as stated above, a known carcinogen. This dose of thimerosol exceeds the EPA’s safety limit of mercury exposure by over 250 times! After seeing this line up I’d sooner sprinkle myself with “pixie dust” or rub a rabbits foot!

So, how can a person protect themselves from entering a state where a flu virus can take hold? Here are a few of my favorite suggestions and ones I use myself.

1.) Maintain adequate vitamin A and D levels. This helps the immune system fight viral infections. Examples of some great foods loaded with Vit A: Liver (turkey liver is the highest), carrots, sweet potatoes, butternut squash, and dark leafy greens. Great food sources of Vit D are: fish (herring, salmon, and sardines are highest), eggs, mushrooms, and dairy (here in Calif. we can purchase good raw dairy at Lassen’s). But one of our best sources is still the sun, sans sunscreen. So, if you live anywhere sunny as I do, then get out there and enjoy it responsibly, exposing as much skin as possible.

2.) Getting plenty of Vit C is another excellent preventative. I prefer to obtain my Vit. C from foods and one of the best sources of neutral Vit C are onions, any type, green, yellow, purple ect. Cooked is best and the most digestible, so add plenty them to all your cooking where appropriate.

3.) Wash your hands frequently and remember, the real benefit is not the soap but the friction applied with your hands.

4.) Finally, drinking adequate amounts of water systematically, meaning 3-4 oz every 30 min., to maintain hydration and assist with cleansing the body helps the immune system ward off infection. The kidneys can only handle 8 oz of fluid per hour, so guzzling large amounts of water at one time is unproductive. Distilled water is best and if you are into storing water for emergencies, as I am, distilled water will keep the longest.

Here’s to your healthiest winter season ever!

This is the time of year when we typically gather with family and friends, open presents, share holiday cheer and feast to our hearts content on some of our favorite foods.

But let’s face it…….as much as we might love the company…….it really is all about the food (and leftovers) isn’t it! I bet you may already be dreaming of that tender turkey or ham, mouth watering mashed potatoes, and warm pumpkin pie. I know I am!

So, in honor of this special time of year I would like to share one of my favorite, and healthy, Christmas recipes for Cranapple Relish with Pecans. I hope it will delight and light up your taste buds and maybe even become a holiday staple.

Not only is this the perfect accompaniment for any traditional Christmas dinner, it is also delicious mixed with yogurt or fresh cream. You can even add it to your favorite hot cereal. So make plenty and enjoy it often!

                            Cranapple Relish With Pecans

This easy Christmas recipe uses ingredients you can easily find, even on a last-minute excursion to your grocery store!

Yield: 2 cups

Ingredients:

2 tablespoons sweet butter (raw butter or ghee is preferred)

2 medium apples, peeled and finely diced

12-ounce package fresh cranberries

1 cup coarsely chopped pecans

1 cup fresh organic orange juice

2 tablespoons fresh squeezed lemon juice

3 tablespoons finely chopped orange rind

1 tablespoon finely chopped lemon rind

1 tablespoon cornstarch

¼ teaspoon cinnamon

¼ teaspoon stevia or to taste

Instructions:

Heat the butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the apples, cranberries, and pecans, and sauté for about 10 minutes or until the apples and cranberries are soft.

Place the remaining ingredients in a small bowl and combine well. Add this mixture to the cranberry mixture and stir gently.

Simmer the ingredients and continue cooking until the mixture thickens slightly.

Transfer the relish to a bowl and refrigerate for several hours before serving.

Oh, before I take off to start my own holiday cooking I’ll share just one more recipe that is a favorite of mine for christmas day breakfast as well as a great way to use any bananas (especially over-ripe ones) you may have around. I call this Banana Eggs and the receipe is as follows:

1 ripe banana

2-3 eggs

1 tsp cinnamon

dash of salt

Stevia to taste (I like the liquid vanilla flavor)

Place all ingredients in blender and blend till smooth. Melt butter in a pan and cook the blended egg misture like you would scrambled eggs. It will have the texture of scrambled eggs, but taste a bit like banana custard. Yum!

Well, I gotta go and get to work in the kitchen but I forsee some good eating in your days ahead.

From my home to yours………have a Very Merry Christmas!

This may be yesterday’s news to you, but did you know that Monsanto owns or controls roughly 90% of the GMO seeds in the world. These “special” seeds have been genetically modified to produce their own pesticide or survive repeated spraying with Monsanto’s toxic herbicide Roundup.

By the way, these genetically altered seeds were never designed to help farmers increase their yields, but rather, to increase Monsanto’s profits via the sales of chemicals such as Roundup and their high-priced patented seeds that farmers are then forced to buy year after year.

Needless to say, Monsanto has considerable political clout. Because of this, Americans everywhere are being denied the right to know whether their foods are genetically engineered or not! This is dangerous for all of us, as we do not yet know the true long-term effects these manipulations will have on the general population.

Listed below are 10 facts about Monsanto and GMO”s, and how they can adversely affect your health, local farmers, and the planet:

There are no GMO labeling laws in the US

There is no safety testing for GMOs

Monsanto puts small farmers out of business

Monsanto products pollute organic farms and the world

Monsanto blocks government regulations

Monsanto falsely advertises Roundup as “biodegradable”

Consumers reject bovine growth hormone

GMO crops do not increase yields

Monsanto controls US soy market

GMO foods may lead to foods allergies and cancer.

So, what can we do? Here a a few suggestions to help you get started:

Buy organic whenever possible

Avoid processed foods of all kinds, but espeically those containing corn, soy, cottonseed and canola oil unless organically certified. Always read your labels!

Call or send a letter to your elected officials asking them to support labeling and safety testing of GMO’s as well as subsidies to help family farmers make the transition to organic.

Congressman Dennis Kucinich (D-OH) is preparing to reintroduce a bill to require mandatory labeling of all GMO foods. Oh, and lets not forget to remind President Obama that during his campaign he promised to support labeling of GMO products!

It’s time to send a message to the biggest Biotech Bully of them all, Monsanto!

Did you know that colors are actually visible forms of sunlight carrying vital energy for health?

Each color has a measurable vibratory rate, proven to be healing to the body. In fact, chromo therapy, better known as color therapy is being used more and more throughout the world to bring healing to various bodily organs.

Understanding colors and their values will help you use them better in your daily life. It’s actually fun to know your colors and which ones you may need more on any particular day based on how you are feeling. So, let’s have some fun and review each of the colors and their potential to affect our lives.

Red is vibrant and energetic. Cayenne pepper and radishes are red, and when eaten promote heat, improving the circulation of blood throughout the body. Red foods such as beets, raspberries and cherries are terrific blood builders.

Orange is also an energetic color and stimulates creativity. The famous horticulturist, Luther Burbank, used orange lights to help plants grow stronger and healthier.

Yellow is a happy, cheerful color, promoting healthy digestion and mental clarity. Yellow fruits and vegetables, because of their high magnesium content can have a mild laxative effect and are also great for our nerves. Yellow and orange foods are high in vitamin C and great for the immune system. They also help the body rid itself of mucus.

Green is a healing color. Plants, through photosynthesis, transfer energy from the sun into natural sugars and green chlorophyll, which provides vital food and life force to both humans and animals. Green leafy vegetables, broccoli, asparagus, celery, and string beans are all great healing vegetables high in chlorophyll (blood), iron (blood and liver), natural sodium (lymph), and calcium (bones).

Blue is the color of our sky and oceans and is a very soothing, peaceful color. Eating blueberries or just gazing out into the infinite blue sky is very healing for the eyes. Blue vervain is an herb that is very calming to the nerves.

Purple is a royal, spiritual color symbolizing the power of faith and love. This vibration is associated with honor, prosperity, and self mastery. Purple foods such as grapes, elderberries, eggplant, sea vegetables, and turnips build the blood, the liver and the thyroid gland, which is master gland that helps to regulate metabolism and harmony in body mind and spirit.

White is the color that holds the highest vibratory frequency. White represents purity, peace, and truth. In light, white represents the perfect blending of all colors of the rainbow.

What are delicious loaded with nutrients, compact and contain one of the highest-quality proteins available? Eggs. Since the beginning of time eggs from chickens, ducks, turtles and even ostriches have been a valued food source. Unfortunately, many people avoid eggs because of misleading information. The egg’s reputation is undeserving and should be reconsidered.

Take a look inside
Did you know just one large egg contains iron, phosphorus, potassium, and calcium as well as vitamins A, K, E, D and B-complex? In other words every nutrient the body needs, except vitamin C. Within the vitamin B-complex, is choline – a fatty substance found in every living cell and a major component of brain functioning. Choline helps break up cholesterol deposits by preventing oxidized fats and cholesterol from sticking to our arteries. Boasting a mere 75 calories, each large egg provides 6 to 7 grams of protein and 5 grams of (good) fat. You may be surprised to learn that the nutrients available in eggs combat colon and breast cancer, macular degeneration and cataracts. They also protect our skin from sun damage.

Cholesterol 101
Not all cholesterol is created equal. There’s good and bad cholesterol. Oxidized cholesterol is what we should avoid; it’s toxic to our bodies and can create heart disease. Oxidized cholesterol comes primarily from polyunsaturated fats (soy, canola, sunflower, and safflower oils), as well as refined carbohydrates and simple sugars. The good cholesterol, which is essential for optimal health, is made by our liver and is protective to our brain and circulatory system – especially as we age. Furthermore, having too little cholesterol in our bodies can actually be harmful. A person with a fatty acid deficiency may suffer from dry skin, hair loss, bruising, and low resistance to infection.

Eggs are not all created equal
This is where labels come in handy – if you know what they mean. It’s easy to be mislead by labels on egg cartons, so let me clear up the confusion – and help you get the healthiest eggs by telling you exactly what the labels do and don’t say.

Free-Range: These chickens are uncaged and have some degree of outside access. This label doesn’t tell us whether the chickens are packed inside a hen house which can harm the health of the chickens by producing high levels of air pollutants.

Cage Free: These chickens are uncaged but still packed inside a barn or warehouse. They aren’t required to have access to the outdoors and their diet isn’t even addressed.

Natural: This label doesn’t tell us anything about the environment in which the chickens are raised either. Are they packed into a barn? Do they have outdoor access? The only thing it tells us is that the chickens and eggs are minimally processed.

Also note, all of the above leave out information regarding the quality of land the chickens have access to. Obviously, these labels are pretty tricky. Not only are they misleading but not one of them is required to be verified.

The ideal eggs are organic, free-range, pasture-raised, and fertile (which means they were raised with a rooster). All this should be indicated on the carton. Avoid eggs that come from large factory farms. Certified Humane eggs come next on the list but they too can be difficult to find. Eggs Certified Organic by the U.S.D.A are your best option for quality and availability. These eggs are in compliance with government-backed standards verified by independent, accredited certifiers and are readily available. These chickens are uncaged and required to have outdoor access. They are fed an organic all-vegetarian diet free of animal by-products, antibiotics and pesticides. They cannot have been treated with antibiotics. If treatment is required they are diverted from the organic food stream.

Good quality eggs yield many health benefits and the highest quality eggs come from healthy, properly raised chickens.

God gave us a perfect food in a compact, convenient carrying case – the egg. Like the egg, there are many other superfoods to meet your unique needs. Let Women’s Health Advantage help you find them.

Catherine Ebeling RN, BSN

www.simplesmartnutrition.com

If you are interested in your health in the least bit, you know that candy bars are not the best form of food for you. Loaded with sugar, and short on protein, they give the body a quick lift without providing any real nourishment. The lift soon gives way to a letdown and you feel hungrier than before. Many also contain hydrogenated oils and a slew of artificial ingredients.

But candy bars are quick and convenient. They have a long shelf life and can be sold in vending machines. They taste good – actually they can be addictive – and can stave off hunger and cravings. But they elevate your blood sugar and make you gain weight. Even athletes use them for a convenient quick dose of energy. So what does a health conscious consumer do in this candy bar culture?

Energy bars to the rescue. They look and taste like candy bars, have the shelf life of candy bars, contain protein and fiber, are loaded with vitamins and minerals. They are convenient and they taste good. And somehow we have been duped into thinking this is ‘healthy snack food’, or worse yet, a ‘meal replacement’.

The original energy bars, such as the Power Bar and the Source Bar, were based on so-called ‘natural’ sweeteners – high fructose corn syrup and juice concentrates – along with dried fruits and nuts, a combination that resulted in higher percentages of carbohydrates than the typical chocolate candy bar (which is rich in cocoa butter, a healthy natural fat).

The energy bar industry exploded with the advent of cheap soy and whey proteins that could be added to make a ‘high-protein’ bar. Balance Bars (“The Complete Nutritional Food Bar”) and ZonePerfect Bars (“All Natural Nutrition Bars”), and Atkins Bars were among the first to hit the shelves as energy/protein bars.

But there is nothing natural about the protein used in today’s energy bars.

Soy protein comes with an initial burden of phytic acid, enzyme inhibitors and isoflavones. Much of the soy in energy bars is genetically modified, as well. More toxins are formed during high-temperature chemical processing, including nitrates, lysinalanine and MSG. Soy protein must be processed at very high temperatures to reduce levels of phytic acid and enzyme inhibitors, a process that denatures many of the proteins in soy, especially lysine, making them unavailable to be used as protein in the body.

Whey protein is inherently fragile and must be processed at low temperatures or its qualities as a protein are destroyed. That is why casein rather than whey protein is used in animal feed. When cheese, butter, and cream were made on the farm, the whey and skim milk were given to the pigs and chickens. But today these products are made in factories far from the farms where they originated, so the industry has a “whey problem,” solved by drying the skim milk and whey at high temperatures and putting the powders into energy drinks, body building powders and high-protein bars.

Other major ingredients include high fructose corn syrup (or concentrated fruit juices, which are high in fructose), an ingredient that has been shown to be worse for test animals than sugar, and in humans, it causes our insulin levels to spike as that sugar overloads our systems. Other ingredients include “natural” fiber from oats, apples, soy, and citrus. Sometimes maltodextrin is given as the fiber source. “Natural flavors” and piles of synthetic vitamins are thrown in so the bars can be called “complete.”

On the plus side, the fat source in most energy bars is often palm, palm kernel, or coconut oil.

Major Ingredients in Current Energy Bars in the Supermarket
Boulder Bar (“Provides sustained energy from naturally delicious real food”): Apple juice, figs, whole brown rice syrup, maltodextrin (complex carb), soy protein isolate, oat bran, oat flour, rice flour.

Source Bar (“Total Sports Nutrition”): Dried plums and dates, grape juice concentrate, wheat flour, whey protein concentrate, defatted peanut flour, honey, fruit juice concentrate, oats, raisins, pecans, soy flour, canola oil.

Power Bar (“Fuel for Optimum Performance”): High fructose corn syrup, grape and pear juice concentrate, oat bran, maltodextrin, milk protein, brown rice, sesame butter, barley malt, peanut butter.

Clif Bar (“Nutrition for Sustained Energy”): Brown rice syrup, rolled oats, soy nuggets (soy protein isolate, rice flour, malt extract), evaporated cane juice, roasted soy butter, chocolate chips, fig paste, cocoa, almonds, ClifCrunchTM (apple fiber, oat fiber, milled flaxseed, soy fiber, chicory extract, lemon fiber, psyllium).

BioZone Bars (“Programmed Nutrition”): Fructose syrup, soy protein isolate, honey, calcium caseinate, toasted soybeans, corn syrup, sugar, palm and palm kernel oils, peanut butter, cocoa powder, lactose, whey protein concentrate.

Balance Bars (“The Complete Nutritional Food Bar”): Protein blend (soy protein isolate, calcium caseinate, toasted soy beans, whey protein concentrate, whey), high fructose corn syrup, honey, fructose, almonds, high maltose corn syrup, canola oil, palm and palm kernel oils, sunflower oil.

Think! Interactive Bar (“Concentration, Calmness, Stamina”): Advanced protein blend (peanut protein, sodium caseinate, isolated soy protein, nonfat dry milk, lactoalbumin), peanut butter, fructose syrup, brown sugar, high concentrate soy flour, MCTs, molasses, yeast, milk chocolate.

Dr. Soy (“The smart choice for delicious nutrition as a snack or meal replacement bar”): Soy Blend (soy protein isolate and soy nuggets), malitol syrup, brown rice syrup, sugar, fractionated palm kernel oil, nonfat dry milk, yogurt powder, honey.

Atkins Advantage (“The Original Low-Carb Lifestyle”): Protein blend (soy protein isolate, hydrolyzed collagen, whey protein isolate, calcium/sodium caseinate), glycerine, polydextrose (fiber), cocoa butter, cocoa powder, water, natural coconut oil, soy nuggets (soy protein, rice flour, malt, salt), cellulose, olive oil, sucralose.

With the exception of the fats, most of the ingredients used in energy bars are waste products – soy protein isolate and whey protein are the waste products of the soy oil and cheese industries respectively. Apple and lemon fiber, used to create a crunchy effect, are also waste products, made from the pulp left over from squeezing the fruits for their juice. Soy lecithin, another common ingredient, is also a waste product of the soy oil industry. And most of the sweeteners are made by highly industrialized processes. In short, most of the ingredients in energy bars are anything but natural.

While many of the modern energy bars emphasize athletic performance, others are said to promote optimal mental performance. The Think! Nutrition Bar claims that it will bestow “concentration, calmness, stamina.” “For best results,” says the label, “Eat a Think! Nutrition bar and 16 ounces fresh water 30 minutes before using your brain.”

A new angle on energy bar hype is used for bars formulated for women. The wrapper for the CLIF Luna Chocolate Pecan Pie Whole Nutrition Bar for Women contains the following paean: “We believe that what we put into our bodies matters; food feeds our souls, lifts our spirits, nourishes and sustains us. That’s why we created LUNA, the blissfully good, whole nutrition bar for women. In just 180 calories, LUNA meets many of the specific nutritional requirements women need everyday to maintain active life-styles. Join us in healthy, joyous living!”

The energy bar phenomenon capitalizes on a real human need – that of a convenient, nutrient-dense, concentrated travel food that keeps well, satisfies and tastes good. Such commodities indeed exist. One is called cheese, a fermented, high-calorie storage food that keeps well on journeys, is rich in nutrients and high enough in fat to be truly satisfying. A fresh apple and a handful of almonds provides truly natural carbohydrates, healthy fats, protein and fiber, without the unnatural by-products of the commercially prepared energy bars.

One of the most perfect natural high protein, high-energy snacks that could be taken most anywhere is beef jerky. Beef jerky bought commercially can be full of preservatives and nitrites, but if you shop carefully you can find beef jerky without the chemicals. U.S. Wellness Meats makes delicious beef jerky in a spicy or regular flavor and it is preserved only with salt. Made with all natural, hormone, and drug free, grass fed beef, it is not only high in protein, but contains small amounts of healthy, Omega 3 and CLA rich fat.

Pemmican, used by Native Americans, was the perfect energy bar. Made from dried lean meat and rendered fat packed into rawhide bags, it was highly concentrated and kept without refrigeration for long periods of time. One and one-half pounds could sustain a grown man doing heavy work all day. This was no ZONE bar – eighty percent of calories in pemmican come from fat and almost none from carbohydrates, except on the occasion when dried berries were added. U.S. Wellness Meats makes a delicious energy-rich pemmican bar with high Omega 3 and CLA fats, beef jerky, sea salt, and dried cherries. Many professional endurance and strength-training athletes swear by pemmican. After all, fat produces about three times the ATP (energy used by the muscles) as carbohydrates.

Soaked and dehydrated nuts make a good snack that everyone can enjoy. They can be kept in your car or office. Most do not need refrigeration. A combination of nuts with cheese and hard sausage makes a complete meal.

A satisfying bar made of ground nuts, coconut or palm oil, butter oil and low-temperature dried animal protein would be relatively complete and satisfy the requirements for a nutritious travel food. But real food ingredients are not cheap; on the contrary, they are expensive and go against the kind of profit margins the food industry requires. Like cheese and cured sausage, any nutritious energy bar must be produced locally by artisans, on a small scale – and without the hype. U.S. Wellness Meats offers a complete line of healthy, nutritious snacks that are made of ‘REAL’ food. Try Organic Ginger ‘love bites’, Organic Tropical ‘love bites’, Dried goji berries, incan berries, and mulberries, or delicious and habit-forming Mystic Mountain trail mix to name a few of the healthy snacks available.

Ignore the hype and advertising of the slick, packaged energy bars. These bars are not healthy food, they are candy bars, or worse disguised as something the big food companies will tell you that you can substitute for meals, pump up your energy, or help you improve your athletic performance. Only REAL food will build up your body, fuel your energy and enhance your health. Stick to that which is unprocessed, unpackaged, and has few ingredients. Your body will thank you for it.

What do pesticides, chemicals, unsaturated and hydrogenated fats, fluoridated water, microwaved foods, dental fillings, and stress all have in common? They all lead to the depletion of our body’s natural supply of enzymes.

So what are enzymes? Enzymes are the special proteins in our bodies that “do the work” required for all of our internal processes. Life as we know it cannot exist without enzymes. In fact, all living things contain enzymes!

Each of these enzymes has a job to do. And that job may be: Digestion of a certain kind of food, the manufacture of a hormone, or keeping your blood clean and free of toxins. Ultimately, our life, vitality, and health all depend upon an adequate supply of enzymes!

Imagine your body as your physical “home.” In this instance, enzymes are the “construction workers” responsible for all the building, repair and maintenance required to keep you running in tip-top shape, using vitamins and minerals as the building “materials.” In your body, you may have an ample supply of building material but not enough workers, or enzymes, to complete the job. Those building materials will remain unused or wasted until enough workers (enzymes) show up at the job site. Make sense?

Therefore, creating a solid foundation for our “home” is of utmost importance. And it’s good to keep in mind that our bodies are driven by food. Think for a moment about the foods you crave; these cravings are actually a sign of deeper nutritional issues, serving as a “cry” for specific nutrients. Not knowing any better, we, in turn, rush in and give our bodies a “quick fix” via the foods we choose in response to the craving.

The good news is that we can learn to work with our body’s natural abilities for optimum wellness! We can begin to care for our bodies in just the right way by changing some old habits and patterns and creating new ones that sustain us and lead to vibrant health.

Of course, we can take vitamin and mineral supplements to boost our health, but in reality, these vitamins and minerals are only “co-enzymes” and can do nothing for us without the foundation of our body’s enzymes. Because it’s so easy for our body’s natural enzyme supply to be depleted, it’s essential that we not only have the foundation of a healthy diet… but it’s also a smart idea to take plant enzymes regularly so that our natural supply is not exhausted!

In the last article, we discussed the definition of enzymes and how they go to work in our bodies. As a quick reminder, enzymes are: The special proteins in our bodies that “do the work” required for all of our internal processes. And each enzyme has a specific job to do whether it’s the digestion of a certain kind of food, the manufacture of a hormone, or keeping your blood clean and free of toxins.

To break it down even further, the three types of enzymes are:

Metabolic enzymes. These enzymes run our body’s chemistry and are involved in all body processes including breathing, thinking, talking, moving and immunity. They exist in our organs, bones, blood, and inside our cells; they are instrumental in the growth of new cells and maintenance of all tissue.

Pancreatic enzymes. These are “digestive” enzymes that are secreted mainly by the pancreas, but also in the mouth, stomach, and small intestine; they play a vital role in the digestion of food.

Plant enzymes. These enzymes, which are present in all raw plants, are essential in the proper digestion of food. Unlike pancreatic enzymes, plant enzymes work in the mouth and stomach where they predigest foods. Plant enzymes also operate in the small intestine, aiding pancreatic enzymes in continuing the digestive process.

In order for us not to use up our reserves of the naturally-occurring metabolic enzymes, we can supplement with plant enzymes to spare our bodies from depleting our precious metabolic enzymes. Remember in the last article, we talked about how our body’s natural supply of enzymes can also be depleted by things such as pesticides and chemicals, unsaturated and hydrogenated fats (trans fats), microwaved foods, amalgam dental fillings, and stress.

So, it’s important to stay on top of our health! And supplementing with plant enzymes can maximize digestion, absorption, and assimilation of food. These enzymes also help to keep the body in proper pH balance, reverse nutritional deficiency, and detoxify in a very gentle manner.

Of course, to create vibrant health, we must first establish a solid foundation which entails a healthy diet. The next step, then, is in taking plant enzymes to assure that our food gets broken down properly and transported to, and utilized by, the appropriate cells… leading to optimum wellness!

Your body thanks you for taking the time to read this article and making your health a priority! Stay tuned for Part 3 to continue to learn more about the importance of enzymes.

In the previous articles, we discussed the importance of enzymes in our bodies that do the work required for all life processes. The three types of enzymes are: 1) metabolic enzymes, 2) pancreatic enzymes, and 3) plant enzymes.

Research has shown that low enzyme levels can lead to illness. In fact, eighty percent of our body’s energy is expended by the digestive process. And if you are run down, under stress, eating a less than ideal diet, or dealing with major life changes then enormous quantities of extra enzymes are required by your body.

It is known that all disease has a nutritional beginning, and a lack of sufficient enzymes plays a role in that process. In the last article, we said that in order to stay on top of our health, it’s important to supplement our diets with plant enzymes; to maximize our digestion, absorption, and assimilation of nutrients in the food we eat. Our entire system functions through enzymatic action.

And as we age, we slowly begin to lose the ability to produce an adequate number of enzymes on our own. You may not even notice the gradual progression of your energy and vitality slipping away. Until one day you find yourself about to engage in your favorite activity (gardening, tennis, biking)… and all of a sudden it has become too much work.

So how do I slow down this aging process, you ask?

Step One:
A healthy, nutrient-rich diet. This includes foods such as organically-grown vegetables and fruits, grass-fed beef and raw milk products. And once you’ve laid that foundation…

Step Two:
Enzyme supplementation. Did you know that you can eat all the healthy food you want, and even take the very best vitamin and mineral supplements, but you’ve just wasted your money if you can’t break it all down and get it to the appropriate cells? See, vitamins and minerals are merely “co-enzymes,” which means that they require enzyme action to even do their work. If you don’t supplement with enzymes, your money and effort toward a healthy diet becomes wasted.

It’s really pretty simple.

In part two of this article, learn more about the three types of enzymes and how taking “plant enzymes” can help you stay healthy and feel your best.

Everyone knows I’m a big advocate of prevention but should something as devastating as a heart attack occur, especially when you are alone, it’s important to know some simple techniques that could increase your odds of survival.

So, along with the gifts, flowers and kisses please cut this out and give it to everyone you love this Valentines Day… it could save their life.

Picture this: it’s 6:15 p.m. and you’re driving home (alone of course), after an unusually frantic day at work. You’re really tired, upset and frustrated.

Suddenly you start experiencing severe chest pain that starts to radiate out into your arm and up into your jaw. You are only about five miles from the nearest hospital but you’re not certain if you’ll be able to make it that far. You’ve had some basic CPR training but can’t recall the instructor ever explaining how to perform it on yourself!

Since many people are alone when they suffer a heart attack, without help, a person whose heart is beating improperly and who begins to feel faint, has only about 10 seconds before losing consciousness. However, you can help yourself by coughing repeatedly and very vigorously.

A deep breath should be taken before each cough and the cough must be deep and prolonged, as if producing sputum from deep inside the chest. A breath and a cough must be repeated approximately every two seconds without let up until help arrives, or until the heart is felt to be beating normally again.

Deep breaths get oxygen into the lungs and the coughing movements squeeze the heart and keep the blood circulating. The squeezing pressure on the heart also helps it regain normal rhythm giving the victim precious additional seconds or minutes to summon or get to professional help.
