This may be yesterday’s news to you, but did you know that Monsanto owns or controls roughly 90% of the GMO seeds in the world. These “special” seeds have been genetically modified to produce their own pesticide or survive repeated spraying with Monsanto’s toxic herbicide Roundup.

By the way, these genetically altered seeds were never designed to help farmers increase their yields, but rather, to increase Monsanto’s profits via the sales of chemicals such as Roundup and their high-priced patented seeds that farmers are then forced to buy year after year.

Needless to say, Monsanto has considerable political clout. Because of this, Americans everywhere are being denied the right to know whether their foods are genetically engineered or not!  This is dangerous for all of us, as we do not yet know the true long-term effects these manipulations will have on the general population.

Listed below  are 10 facts about Monsanto and GMO”s, and how they can adversely affect your health, local farmers, and the planet:

  1. There are no GMO labeling laws in the US
  2. There is no safety testing for GMOs
  3. Monsanto puts small farmers out of business
  4. Monsanto products pollute organic farms and the world
  5. Monsanto blocks government regulations
  6. Monsanto falsely advertises Roundup as “biodegradable”
  7. Consumers reject bovine growth hormone
  8. GMO crops do not increase yields
  9. Monsanto controls US soy market
  10. GMO foods may lead to foods allergies and cancer.

So, what can we do? Here a a few suggestions to help you get started:

  1. Buy organic whenever possible
  2. Avoid processed foods of all kinds, but espeically those containing corn, soy, cottonseed and canola oil unless organically certified. Always read your labels!
  3. Call or send a letter to your elected officials asking them to support labeling and safety testing of GMO’s as well as subsidies to help family farmers make the transition to organic.

Congressman Dennis Kucinich (D-OH) is preparing to reintroduce a bill to require mandatory labeling of all GMO foods. Oh, and lets not forget to remind President Obama that during his campaign he promised to support labeling of GMO products!

It’s time to send a message to the biggest Biotech Bully of them all, Monsanto!

Did you know that colors are actually visible forms of sunlight carrying vital energy for health?

Each color has a measurable vibratory rate, proven to be healing to the body. In fact, chromo therapy, better known as color therapy is being used more and more throughout the world to bring healing to various bodily organs.

Understanding colors and their values will help you use them better in your daily life. It’s actually fun to know your colors and which ones you may need more on any particular day based on how you are feeling. So, let’s have some fun and review each of the colors and their potential to affect our lives.

Red is vibrant and energetic. Cayenne pepper and radishes are red, and when eaten promote heat, improving the circulation of blood throughout the body. Red foods such as beets, raspberries and cherries are terrific blood builders.

Orange is also an energetic color and stimulates creativity. The famous horticulturist, Luther Burbank, used orange lights to help plants grow stronger and healthier.

Yellow is a happy, cheerful color, promoting healthy digestion and mental clarity. Yellow fruits and vegetables, because of their high magnesium content can have a mild laxative effect and are also great for our nerves. Yellow and orange foods are high in vitamin C and great for the immune system. They also help the body rid itself of mucus.

Green is a healing color. Plants, through photosynthesis, transfer energy from the sun into natural sugars and green chlorophyll, which provides vital food and life force to both humans and animals. Green leafy vegetables, broccoli, asparagus, celery, and string beans are all great healing vegetables high in chlorophyll (blood), iron (blood and liver), natural sodium (lymph), and calcium (bones).

Blue is the color of our sky and oceans and is a very soothing, peaceful color. Eating blueberries or just gazing out into the infinite blue sky is very healing for the eyes. Blue vervain is an herb that is very calming to the nerves.

Purple is a royal, spiritual color symbolizing the power of faith and love. This vibration is associated with honor, prosperity, and self mastery. Purple foods such as grapes, elderberries, eggplant, sea vegetables, and turnips build the blood, the liver and the thyroid gland, which is master gland that helps to regulate metabolism and harmony in body mind and spirit.

White is the color that holds the highest vibratory frequency. White represents purity, peace, and truth. In light, white represents the perfect blending of all colors of the rainbow.

What are delicious loaded with nutrients, compact and contain one of the highest-quality proteins available? Eggs. Since the beginning of time eggs from chickens, ducks, turtles and even ostriches have been a valued food source. Unfortunately, many people avoid eggs because of misleading information. The egg’s reputation is undeserving and should be reconsidered.

Take a look inside
Did you know just one large egg contains iron, phosphorus, potassium, and calcium as well as vitamins A, K, E, D and B-complex? In other words every nutrient the body needs, except vitamin C. Within the vitamin B-complex, is choline – a fatty substance found in every living cell and a major component of brain functioning. Choline helps break up cholesterol deposits by preventing oxidized fats and cholesterol from sticking to our arteries. Boasting a mere 75 calories, each large egg provides 6 to 7 grams of protein and 5 grams of (good) fat. You may be surprised to learn that the nutrients available in eggs combat colon and breast cancer, macular degeneration and cataracts. They also protect our skin from sun damage.

Cholesterol 101
Not all cholesterol is created equal. There’s good and bad cholesterol. Oxidized cholesterol is what we should avoid; it’s toxic to our bodies and can create heart disease. Oxidized cholesterol comes primarily from polyunsaturated fats (soy, canola, sunflower, and safflower oils), as well as refined carbohydrates and simple sugars. The good cholesterol, which is essential for optimal health, is made by our liver and is protective to our brain and circulatory system – especially as we age. Furthermore, having too little cholesterol in our bodies can actually be harmful. A person with a fatty acid deficiency may suffer from dry skin, hair loss, bruising, and low resistance to infection.

Eggs are not all created equal
This is where labels come in handy – if you know what they mean. It’s easy to be mislead by labels on egg cartons, so let me clear up the confusion – and help you get the healthiest eggs by telling you exactly what the labels do and don’t say.

Free-Range: These chickens are uncaged and have some degree of outside access. This label doesn’t tell us whether the chickens are packed inside a hen house which can harm the health of the chickens by producing high levels of air pollutants.

Cage Free: These chickens are uncaged but still packed inside a barn or warehouse. They aren’t required to have access to the outdoors and their diet isn’t even addressed.

Natural: This label doesn’t tell us anything about the environment in which the chickens are raised either. Are they packed into a barn? Do they have outdoor access? The only thing it tells us is that the chickens and eggs are minimally processed.

Also note, all of the above leave out information regarding the quality of land the chickens have access to. Obviously, these labels are pretty tricky. Not only are they misleading but not one of them is required to be verified.

The ideal eggs are organic, free-range, pasture-raised, and fertile (which means they were raised with a rooster). All this should be indicated on the carton. Avoid eggs that come from large factory farms. Certified Humane eggs come next on the list but they too can be difficult to find. Eggs Certified Organic by the U.S.D.A are your best option for quality and availability. These eggs are in compliance with government-backed standards verified by independent, accredited certifiers and are readily available. These chickens are uncaged and required to have outdoor access. They are fed an organic all-vegetarian diet free of animal by-products, antibiotics and pesticides. They cannot have been treated with antibiotics. If treatment is required they are diverted from the organic food stream.

Good quality eggs yield many health benefits and the highest quality eggs come from healthy, properly raised chickens.

God gave us a perfect food in a compact, convenient carrying case – the egg. Like the egg, there are many other superfoods to meet your unique needs. Let Women’s Health Advantage help you find them.

If you are interested in your health in the least bit, you know that candy bars are not the best form of food for you. Loaded with sugar, and short on protein, they give the body a quick lift without providing any real nourishment. The lift soon gives way to a letdown and you feel hungrier than before. Many also contain hydrogenated oils and a slew of artificial ingredients.

But candy bars are quick and convenient. They have a long shelf life and can be sold in vending machines. They taste good – actually they can be addictive – and can stave off hunger and cravings. But they elevate your blood sugar and make you gain weight. Even athletes use them for a convenient quick dose of energy. So what does a health conscious consumer do in this candy bar culture?

Energy bars to the rescue. They look and taste like candy bars, have the shelf life of candy bars, contain protein and fiber, are loaded with vitamins and minerals. They are convenient and they taste good. And somehow we have been duped into thinking this is ‘healthy snack food’, or worse yet, a ‘meal replacement’.

The original energy bars, such as the Power Bar and the Source Bar, were based on so-called ‘natural’ sweeteners – high fructose corn syrup and juice concentrates – along with dried fruits and nuts, a combination that resulted in higher percentages of carbohydrates than the typical chocolate candy bar (which is rich in cocoa butter, a healthy natural fat).

The energy bar industry exploded with the advent of cheap soy and whey proteins that could be added to make a ‘high-protein’ bar. Balance Bars (“The Complete Nutritional Food Bar”) and ZonePerfect Bars (“All Natural Nutrition Bars”), and Atkins Bars were among the first to hit the shelves as energy/protein bars.

What do pesticides, chemicals, unsaturated and hydrogenated fats, fluoridated water, microwaved foods, dental fillings, and stress all have in common? They all lead to the depletion of our body’s natural supply of enzymes.

So what are enzymes? Enzymes are the special proteins in our bodies that “do the work” required for all of our internal processes. Life as we know it cannot exist without enzymes. In fact, all living things contain enzymes!

Each of these enzymes has a job to do. And that job may be: Digestion of a certain kind of food, the manufacture of a hormone, or keeping your blood clean and free of toxins. Ultimately, our life, vitality, and health all depend upon an adequate supply of enzymes!

Imagine your body as your physical “home.” In this instance, enzymes are the “construction workers” responsible for all the building, repair and maintenance required to keep you running in tip-top shape, using vitamins and minerals as the building “materials.” In your body, you may have an ample supply of building material but not enough workers, or enzymes, to complete the job. Those building materials will remain unused or wasted until enough workers (enzymes) show up at the job site. Make sense?

Therefore, creating a solid foundation for our “home” is of utmost importance. And it’s good to keep in mind that our bodies are driven by food. Think for a moment about the foods you crave; these cravings are actually a sign of deeper nutritional issues, serving as a “cry” for specific nutrients. Not knowing any better, we, in turn, rush in and give our bodies a “quick fix” via the foods we choose in response to the craving.

The good news is that we can learn to work with our body’s natural abilities for optimum wellness! We can begin to care for our bodies in just the right way by changing some old habits and patterns and creating new ones that sustain us and lead to vibrant health.

Of course, we can take vitamin and mineral supplements to boost our health, but in reality, these vitamins and minerals are only “co-enzymes” and can do nothing for us without the foundation of our body’s enzymes. Because it’s so easy for our body’s natural enzyme supply to be depleted, it’s essential that we not only have the foundation of a healthy diet… but it’s also a smart idea to take plant enzymes regularly so that our natural supply is not exhausted!

In the last article, we discussed the definition of enzymes and how they go to work in our bodies. As a quick reminder, enzymes are: The special proteins in our bodies that “do the work” required for all of our internal processes. And each enzyme has a specific job to do whether it’s the digestion of a certain kind of food, the manufacture of a hormone, or keeping your blood clean and free of toxins.

To break it down even further, the three types of enzymes are:

Metabolic enzymes. These enzymes run our body’s chemistry and are involved in all body processes including breathing, thinking, talking, moving and immunity. They exist in our organs, bones, blood, and inside our cells; they are instrumental in the growth of new cells and maintenance of all tissue.

Pancreatic enzymes. These are “digestive” enzymes that are secreted mainly by the pancreas, but also in the mouth, stomach, and small intestine; they play a vital role in the digestion of food.

Plant enzymes. These enzymes, which are present in all raw plants, are essential in the proper digestion of food. Unlike pancreatic enzymes, plant enzymes work in the mouth and stomach where they predigest foods. Plant enzymes also operate in the small intestine, aiding pancreatic enzymes in continuing the digestive process.

In order for us not to use up our reserves of the naturally-occurring metabolic enzymes, we can supplement with plant enzymes to spare our bodies from depleting our precious metabolic enzymes. Remember in the last article, we talked about how our body’s natural supply of enzymes can also be depleted by things such as pesticides and chemicals, unsaturated and hydrogenated fats (trans fats), microwaved foods, amalgam dental fillings, and stress.

So, it’s important to stay on top of our health! And supplementing with plant enzymes can maximize digestion, absorption, and assimilation of food. These enzymes also help to keep the body in proper pH balance, reverse nutritional deficiency, and detoxify in a very gentle manner.

Of course, to create vibrant health, we must first establish a solid foundation which entails a healthy diet. The next step, then, is in taking plant enzymes to assure that our food gets broken down properly and transported to, and utilized by, the appropriate cells… leading to optimum wellness!

Your body thanks you for taking the time to read this article and making your health a priority! Stay tuned for Part 3 to continue to learn more about the importance of enzymes.

In the previous articles, we discussed the importance of enzymes in our bodies that do the work required for all life processes. The three types of enzymes are: 1) metabolic enzymes, 2) pancreatic enzymes, and 3) plant enzymes.

Research has shown that low enzyme levels can lead to illness. In fact, eighty percent of our body’s energy is expended by the digestive process. And if you are run down, under stress, eating a less than ideal diet, or dealing with major life changes then enormous quantities of extra enzymes are required by your body.

It is known that all disease has a nutritional beginning, and a lack of sufficient enzymes plays a role in that process. In the last article, we said that in order to stay on top of our health, it’s important to supplement our diets with plant enzymes; to maximize our digestion, absorption, and assimilation of nutrients in the food we eat. Our entire system functions through enzymatic action.

And as we age, we slowly begin to lose the ability to produce an adequate number of enzymes on our own. You may not even notice the gradual progression of your energy and vitality slipping away. Until one day you find yourself about to engage in your favorite activity (gardening, tennis, biking)… and all of a sudden it has become too much work.

So how do I slow down this aging process, you ask?

Step One:
A healthy, nutrient-rich diet. This includes foods such as organically-grown vegetables and fruits, grass-fed beef and raw milk products. And once you’ve laid that foundation…

Step Two:
Enzyme supplementation. Did you know that you can eat all the healthy food you want, and even take the very best vitamin and mineral supplements, but you’ve just wasted your money if you can’t break it all down and get it to the appropriate cells? See, vitamins and minerals are merely “co-enzymes,” which means that they require enzyme action to even do their work. If you don’t supplement with enzymes, your money and effort toward a healthy diet becomes wasted.

It’s really pretty simple.

Everyone knows I’m a big advocate of prevention but should something as devastating as a heart attack occur, especially when you are alone, it’s important to know some simple techniques that could increase your odds of survival.

So, along with the gifts, flowers and kisses please cut this out and give it to everyone you love this Valentines Day… it could save their life.

Picture this: it’s 6:15 p.m. and you’re driving home (alone of course), after an unusually frantic day at work. You’re really tired, upset and frustrated.

Suddenly you start experiencing severe chest pain that starts to radiate out into your arm and up into your jaw. You are only about five miles from the nearest hospital but you’re not certain if you’ll be able to make it that far. You’ve had some basic CPR training but can’t recall the instructor ever explaining how to perform it on yourself!

Since many people are alone when they suffer a heart attack, without help, a person whose heart is beating improperly and who begins to feel faint, has only about 10 seconds before losing consciousness. However, you can help yourself by coughing repeatedly and very vigorously.

A deep breath should be taken before each cough and the cough must be deep and prolonged, as if producing sputum from deep inside the chest. A breath and a cough must be repeated approximately every two seconds without let up until help arrives, or until the heart is felt to be beating normally again.

Deep breaths get oxygen into the lungs and the coughing movements squeeze the heart and keep the blood circulating. The squeezing pressure on the heart also helps it regain normal rhythm giving the victim precious additional seconds or minutes to summon or get to professional help.

Heart disease is the number one killer of women in the U.S. Understanding the true essence of the disease is crucial to combating it. In the media and in medical offices, hype has been centered on cholesterol levels and the consumption of animal fats, two theories that face much scientific controversy.

Heart disease actually encompasses a number of straight-forward factors that we should focus on:

Excess consumption of vegetable oils and hydrogenated fats (trans-fats).
Excess consumption of refined carbohydrates in the form of sugar and white flour.
Mineral deficiencies, in particular magnesium and iodine.
Deficiencies of vitamins, in particular vitamins A, C and D. These are needed for the integrity of the blood vessel walls.
Deficiencies of antioxidants like selenium and vitamin E which protect us from free radicals.
Disappearance of antimicrobial fats from our food supply, primarily, animal fats and tropical oils (coconut and palm oil). These protect us from us against both viruses and bacteria that have been associated with the onset of pathogenic plaque that can lead to heart disease.
The prevention of heart disease cannot be achieved with the current focus on lowering cholesterol. Despite its bad rap, cholesterol (like good fat) actually plays a vital role in our health and is an essential component for life and a multitude of normal body functions.

A much better approach for prevention includes:

Consuming a diet that provides animal foods (properly raised), rich in protective fats and vitamins B6 and B12.
Bolstering thyroid function through daily use of natural sea salt.
Avoiding vitamin and mineral deficiencies that make the artery walls more prone to ruptures and the build up of plaque. This can be accomplished by including antimicrobial fats in the diet and eliminating processed foods containing refined carbohydrates, oxidized cholesterol and free-radical-containing vegetable oils that cause the body to need constant repair.
Better tests for evaluating heart disease are available and should include:

Triglycerides – Elevated triglycerides in the blood have been linked to heart disease, but these triglycerides do not come directly from dietary fats; they are made in the liver and stem from foods containing unhealthy carbohydrates, particularly refined sugar and white flour.
Lp(a)
Homocysteine – Has been positively correlated with pathological build-up of plaque and the tendency to form clots.

Jon Benson’s Holiday Survival Pocket Guide

As all of you know, I’m committed to seeing you through this Holiday Season with less body fat and more muscle! You can do this. You do not need to use this time of year as an excuse… in fact, it can be the strongest time of the year for you. Why is that? Well, consider this: if you can actually progress between now and January 1st of next year, just think what you can do in the New Year! Imagine the confidence you would have walking into the brand new year with a better body rather than entering the new year with more fat, less energy, and a “blah” attitude.

Let’s get started with my favorite Holiday Survival Tips…

Low Calories The Day Before
Simply reducing your calories to about half your normal intake the day before a larger meal can work wonders. This way you will balance things out over two days. Just be sure to eat frequently on the low-cal day so you don’t slow down your metabolism.

Low Carbs The Day After
Reduce your carbs to about 50 grams the day after your holiday meal. Yes, that means no leftovers (I’ll get to that in a second.). This will help your insulin levels return to normal, and get your fat-burning kicked off again after the feast. Be sure to get all of your carbs from veggies on this day.

Give Away Your Leftovers
This is a tip I mention every year, and it makes everyone really happy. Instead of making Aunt Edna feel bad about not taking a ton of food home with you, go ahead and accept her hospitality – and then give it away to people without food that very same day. These folks are pretty easy to find if you live in a big city. If not, a few phone calls to half-way houses will be all you’ll need to do in order to really make someone’s holiday very special. This also will save you from the temptation of having a ton of bad food around the house!

Keep Lean Protein High
Be sure to chow on the protein during your holiday meals. Keep the carb foods low to moderate. Spread them out over the day so you don’t eat too much all at once as well.

Drink A Ton Of Water
Drink about a quart of water prior to going to your festivities, and at least that much during and after. This will help flush the toxins through your system, and it will actually make you less hungry.

Keep Desserts To One Serving
Is it REALLY that much to ask? Enjoy a nice dessert after your protein-rich meal, but pass on the seconds. Remember, it’s not the last time you’ll ever eat pie… :-)

Go For A Walk After Eating
Research shows that a 45-minute brisk walk after eating a high-fat meal can reverse the damage done to your arteries. Obviously it will help you feel better as well, and it improves digestion. Use this as a “family time” activity. Suggest a walk around a mall, or perhaps the town centre or neighborhood. Enjoy the time, and get more fit, all at the same time.

Testimonials

I am 49 years old and I've spent the majority of my life extremely obese. I tried every diet under the sun and at times, I did lose weight but in a matter of months, I would gain it all back and more. I weighted in at 400 pounds earlier this year. I was depressed, hopeless and mad as a junk yard dog. A friend of mine told me about Jill Redfern and her organic approach to eating. I met with Jill and she told me the importance of good fats (extra virgin coconut oil) and the importance of protein in the morning. Jill gave me a comprehensive diet plan that was not typical knowledge about the body and a way of eating that has been a joy to implement. I have lost 65 pounds. I have energy and this new lifestyle change is something that I know that I can sustain for the rest of my life. I am forever grateful to Jill for her expertise.
